I have for a while been running an old HP pavillion laptop with debian linux. Everything was working fine, inlcuding the wireless network that I have managed using wicd. During one of the lastest kernel upgrades (approx 2.6.32.something), the wireless suddenly stopped working. For a while I was just using it on wired network when trying to find out what had gone wrong. It turned out the solution was as easy as stupid. One of the lower layers had changed the name of the interface. What formerly was known as wlan0 had suddenly turned into eth2. Input the right interface name in the wireless settings in wicd, and all fine and dandy.
