Linux xorg video problem

Doing an update of a box running debian, after a dist-upgrade, I suddenly lost the graphic display. The screen went blank when trying to start xorg. The display controller was identified by lspci as

Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

but after what I have read, this may also affect other intel chips. To make the story short, the last update of the intel xorg driver is not compatible with older kernels. In my case, the 2.6.26-2 did not work, the 2.6.32-5 worked fine. After some googling i found that the problem has to do with kernel modesettings.
